Early Intervention Program
Our purpose is to help support families with children that have developmental delays or disabilities by exploring creative options within the family and community. Once a child is determined eligible for Early Intervention, an array of options is offered through the child’s third birthday:
Service Coordination – We assist families in finding resources and activities available within the community to best meet the concerns and priorities of the family, and help seek funding sources when appropriate. |
Resource Library – We have several books available on child development, disabilities and parenting. We can research your child’s needs for you on the Internet. Developmentally appropriate toys and equipment are also available for loan.
Home and Community Supports with a Primary Service Provider – A family works with a Transdisciplinary Team to develop an Individualized Family Service Plan (IFSP). The IFSP documents the child’s development and the family’s concerns, priorities and resources. Each IFSP is as unique as each child. Specific plans of action are developed which focus on the child’s development and the family’s daily routines.

Many infants and toddlers need lots of supports to assist in enhancing their development. The challenge is for the Early Intervention Program to be able to meet those needs with limited funding. In order to assist as many children as possible and be flexible with what funding is available, we have adopted the Primary Service Provider model.
The four Transdisciplinary Teams (divided into geographic locations throughout El Paso County) consist of Service Coordinators, Early Intervention Specialists, and therapists – speech, occupational, physical, behavioral – and meet twice a month. They review each child’s case and brainstorm on how best to support each child and family in their daily routines. The assigned Primary Service Provider then carries out the recommendations of their teammates with the child and family. In this way, we support all the needs of each child and family, and we are able to stretch our resources to help many more children in a very effective manner.
As mentioned above, we also have Early Intervention Specialists on staff that can be the Primary Service Provider, when appropriate, for children and families. They can assist with parent instruction (always remembering that the best teacher of any child is the parent), answer developmental questions and concerns, help the family identify specific plans of action for their child’s unique needs. The Early Intervention Program is always family-centered.
